Maaktabah

Our story

Maaktabah is the Arabic word for a library: a room, a shelf, a place where books are kept with care.

The great books already belong to everyone. Yet the copies most people find are cramped and forgettable. We make new editions with calm pages, careful type and covers worth looking at.

One rule never changes: the author’s words stay exactly as they were published. We design around the text, never inside it.

Why a question on every cover

Pride and Prejudice asks whether first impressions can be trusted. A Christmas Carol asks whether it’s ever too late to change. These questions are why the books are still read, so we put them where you can see them.

Why a hand

Every cover shows one hand holding one thing that matters in the story: a sealed letter, a candle by a frosted window. No faces, so you can imagine your own.
